What's up, WP Clashers?
I thought I'd talk a little about what it costs to play this free game we all love so much. Let me start off by saying that everything stated in this post will be said under the assumption that you care about minimizing the time it takes to max out your base while also minimizing what that costs you.
Other than a few challenges, there's really no way to get a decent stash of gems without spending some hard earned money, so it's important to understand what you're getting for these precious gems. First off, we have to realize that the sole purpose of gems is to allow us to level up our bases faster. To that end, I'm sure most of us would agree that getting 5 builders should be your highest priority. There's nothing worse than sitting around waiting for an upgrade to finish, while getting attacked and losing resources that you're saving for the next upgrade.
Other than builders, paying to finish upgrades faster, (which you should never do) and shields, (which you should never buy) everything else you can spend gems on is about resources. Boosting barracks and/or your spell factory will help you attack faster, and hopefully gain resources faster. It's up to you to determine your average raid profit, and then figure out if spending gems to get those extra raids in is worth it. Everything else you can spend gems on has a real world price tag that can be quantified. Let's break it down!
I'm sure you've noticed that you get a better deal on gems when you buy a bunch of them at once, but did you know that buying resources works the same way? For example:
To fill my gold/elixir storage by 10% (400,100) it costs me 494 gems -- 400,100/494 = 1620 per gem
To fill by half (4,000,500) it costs me 1400 gems -- 4,000,500/1400 = 2858 per gem
And if I totally fill up my storage, I get about 3250 per gem
In general, dark elixir costs about 10 times as much as gold or elixir. With all this in mind, you can figure out how to get the most out of your gems. A great example is boosting your collectors. At lvl 10, I have seven gold mines that each give me 3,000 gold per hour (504,000 per day for all seven mines combined). To double production on all seven mines for a day costs me 77 gems, which gives me an extra 504,000 gold, which comes out to almost 6,500 per gem. That's double what you get for filling up your gold storage all at once!
Want an example of what not to do? I have 182,337 gold. I want to by one level 7 wall right this minute, but I'm 17,663 gold short...that'll cost me 34 gems. No big deal right? Are you kidding me? 17,663/34 = 520 per gem...I think I'll stick with the 6,500 gold I get per gem from boosting my mines.
The lesson here is simple...if you absolutely can't wait to get more of a resource, you should buy as much of it as you can at once, but if you're just in a rush, boosting your collectors is always the way to go. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
See ya in the trenches!!!

Barracks Boost Numbers:
I felt like doing a little more math, so here are some numbers I got when raiding raiding non-stop for 2 hours while I had all 4 barracks boosted. For this run, I was trying to get in as many attacks as I could while my barracks were boosted, so I wasn't very picky about who I went at. I used no royalty or spells and ran with Barcher for all the attacks. Keep in mind that I'm at TH10 (even though I shouldn't be) so these numbers are not inflated at all. I did add loot bonuses to my total for each raid (got 1 star or better about 3/4 of the time) and I was in crystal2 for the duration of the boost. Totals for each raid were rounded down.
Raids: 21
Gems used:40
Total Gold: 1,825,000
Total Elixir: 2,282,000
Total Dark: 8,000
Since the barracks boost allows you to get in about 4x more raids than you normally would, 3/4 of my loot totals can be attributed to gems, so the math would look like this:
(1,825,000 X 0.75) / 40 = 34,000 Gold per gem
(2,282,000 X 0.75) / 40 = 42,000 Elixir per gem
(8,000 X 0.75) / 40 = 150 DE per gem
Those numbers are absolutely huge when you consider that 40 gems allows you to collect a nice chunk of every resource in just 2 hours, but that makes sense when you consider that you're actually working for those resources by raiding and dedicating 2 full hours to the game. Even with those somewhat crappy raid totals I got significantly more in 2 hours for 40 gems than I would have gotten for boosting all my gold mines and elixir pumps for 24 hours, which would have cost me 154 gems...the DE can just be considered a bonus!!
